ASCA Cities Seminar Session: “Urban Bioacoustics: Listening to Animal Voices in the GDR” by Sandra Jasper and Jonathan Prior, 22 May 2026

On Friday 22 May 2026, Sandra Jasper (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) and Jonathan Prior (Cardiff University) will join the 2025-2026 ASCA Cities Seminar for a talk titled “Urban Bioacoustics: Listening to Animal Voices in the GDR”. The session takes place from 15.00-17.00 in room 0.16 (E-lab) at the University of Amsterdam, Turfdraagsterpad 9, Amsterdam.

Sandra Jasper is Professor of Geography and holds the Chair in Cultural Geography and Society-Environment Research at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Her research interests are in cultural, urban, and environmental geography with a particular focus on urban nature and biodiversity, wastelands and infrastructures, sonic geographies, and feminist theory. Her new AHRC-DFG funded project Networked through Sound: Listening to 20th Century Wildlife Sound Archives is an international collaborative research project, which examines the history of European wildlife sound recording through seven archives located in Europe and South Africa.

Jonathan Prior is Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Cardiff University, with a broad research interest in nature-society relations. His work is interdisciplinary in approach, spanning cultural geography, sound studies, environmental philosophy, geohumanities, and landscape research.
